A very good Shabbat. It is the first Shabbat of winter and we will try to enjoy the extra hour at the start of Shabbat. You might tell me it also goes out an hour earlier, but we always prefer the entry of holiness, the Kiddush over the Havdalah. In any case, we will try to share a little bit of the messages of this Parashah.

At the beginning, everything is based on the number three , the 3rd day of the Brit Milah. God sends three angels to Abraham, who will spoil them. He prepares a triple menu for them: meaty, dairy, and pareve. He even serves them three tongues with Dijon mustard, or so says Rashi.

Oh, I think that's a bit off, the "three" and "Dijon." All to be able to spoil them well. And who are the three angels? As you well know, we have Raphael, Gabriel , and Michael. And Rashi explains that Raphael came to visit Abraham because it was the 3rd day of his Brit Milah, to heal him.

Raphael, the refuah, health; Michael, Sar Israel; Michael is the one who always announces good news. We wait for news, and he came to announce to Sarah that she would have a child next year. And Gabriel, why did he come? Ah, says Rashi.

Gabriel in Hebrew is Gevurah, rigor, the force to destroy Sodom, right after Abraham, he went to overturn Sodom and Gomorrah and save Lot; the Maharal of Prague—you have always heard of the Maharal of Prague, who died in 1609, a little over 400 years ago. Uh, he wrote several books; in one of the books, Gur Aryeh, he says, "I don't understand what Gabriel came to do at Abraham's.""Did he need to eat a little bit before destroying Sodom?" Okay. Michael is there to announce, Raphael to heal. Gabriel, what are you doing there ?

And there, he answers us, Rabotai, something royal to meditate on and try to apply. The Maharal teaches us that even the angels had a hard time going to destroy Sodom. Because sometimes some of us do things, we were poorly influenced, it's too strong, it overwhelms us. That's what they tried to say to God.

These people of Sodom, they are like that, there is nothing to be done, they cannot improve themselves and work on their character traits. So God asked them to go to Abraham first because Abraham, in the parashah, gave us all in our DNA the possibility to work, as it is written: he is Hashem. Abraham, God testifies that he follows the path of God. It is one of Ramaka's books.

Abraham is the only one who can work on it; what is it? It is kindness, it is the heart. Mishpat is rigor, it is logic. The brain is cold, rigorous; the heart is warm.

But there are people whose hearts are so warm, like the people of Sodom, it is so warm that they are capable, on one hand , of giving everything necessary to the angels, but on the other hand, he says: "Take my daughters, do them harm instead of the guests." Sometimes we get crushed because we are too kind. Being too kind without having rigor is not good. On the other hand, being too cold, without empathy, is also not good. Abraham is the first to work on both, to teach us, the Jewish people; we have a mission, it is called in Hebrew "Avodat haMidot," the work of good character traits, but " midot" means measurements.

Knowing when to be cold, when to have rigor, and knowing when to be warm and have kindness. And that is why the angels went to Abraham first. God told them, "Go see Abraham, that we are capable of becoming like this, because if we don't do that, it will end up like Sodom and Gomorrah. " How many people think they are doing the right thing?

The poor neighbor is there, she is crying, her husband has gone away on vacation. Come on, come into the house. Is that what you call kindness? Not at all.

It is illogical. Hello, are you married? How can you look at another woman? When we have no limits, it is Sodom and Gomorrah, and that is why Gabriel went to Abraham first to understand that we all have this possibility to work on ourselves and make the right connection between the brain and the heart.

Amen.
