Hello everyone. Welcome to our daily appointment for the study of the Rashi of the day. Today is Yom Chamishi, Thursday of Parashat Chayei Sarah, 25 Cheshvan 5787 . Remember to send us your dedications via WhatsApp at +336 217 24 52.
Eliezer was sent on a mission by Avraham Avinu to find a wife for Yitzchak. He discussed it with Rivka's family, who agreed to the marriage, and today we learn that Eliezer is striving to hasten the departure, and his efforts are successful. He brings Rivka with him, and she is betrothed. He brought out gold and silver jewelry as well as clothing, and offered them to Rivka.
He also gave precious gifts to her brother Lavan and her mother Milka. And Eliezer and the men who accompanied him ate, drank, and spent the night there. And in the morning, Lavan and Milka asked that she follow their custom and stay at home for a full year to gather all the jewelry she needed. Since she had only received part of the jewelry from Eliezer, she needed at least 10 months.
Why did Lavan and Milka speak up? Where was her father, Betuel? Rashi explains it to us. In reality, Betuel intended to hinder Eliezer's mission.
So an angel came, and he departed this world that very night. Eliezer replied to them: "Do not make me wait. I have shown you that all of Avraham's assets belong to Yitzchak, and everyone has recognized that this comes from Hashem. She does not need to amass jewelry by herself." Lavan and her mother then decided to consult Rivka to know her wishes.
Rivka declared that she wanted to leave, even if her mother and brother opposed it. They then bid farewell to Rivka and let her go in the company of the woman who had nursed her in her childhood. They gave her a bracha so that the blessings of Avraham would be realized through her and her descendants. The bracha to have numerous offspring and to inherit the gates of her enemies Rivka mounted the camels, following Eliezer.
Meanwhile, Yitzchak had just returned from Be'er Lachai Ro'i, where he had gone to bring back Hagar so she could remarry Avraham Avinu. Yitzchak would go out to the fields to pray the Mincha prayer. He was the very first to institute the Mincha prayer. Moreover, he lifted his eyes and saw the camels arriving.
When Rivka caught sight of Yitzchak, she sensed his great holiness and slipped down from her camel. She asked Eliezer who that man was. Eliezer replied that it was his master, and Rebecca covered herself with her veil. Eliezer then told Isaac everything that had happened and how Hashem had performed miracles to help him find the person destined for him.
Isaac brought her into Sarah's tent so she could take over the household, and he immediately noticed that Rebecca was like his mother Sarah. All of Sarah's miracles reappeared as soon as Rebecca entered the tent. He saw that she was worthy of being the next of the Matriarchs and married her. Isaac loved her and thus found comfort after the passing of his mother Sarah.
Today we are reading the first part of Psalm 119. In today’s Psalm, there is a verse that proclaims: "I am a companion to all those who fear You, and to those who observe Your precepts." This verse teaches us that when we see others performing a mitzvah, we should seek to lend them a hand if we can, like a true friend. In many letters and speeches by the Lubavitcher Rebbe, he would cite this verse to explain why he provided financial support to a project or institution. Let us perform good deeds.
One can also see the Rebbe citing this verse in videos during the distribution of dollars. May we always be at the side of those who perform mitzvot for Hashem. Tanya, Iggeret HaKodesh, Siman 32. In this letter, the Alter Rebbe explains the capital importance of love for one's neighbor, Ahavat Yisrael, and the fact that we need it to bring the Redemption Hashem and the Jewish people are compared to a heart and a body.
The Divine Presence, the Shechinah, is like the heart that breathes vitality, Chayut , into Israel. And the totality of the Jewish people forms the body that receives this vitality from Hashem. How does a body live? The heart pumps blood, which carries vitality, to all parts of the body to nourish them.
Then the blood returns to the heart. As long as no obstacle blocks the circulation of the blood, it can flow. The whole body remains in perfect health , Hashem should grant this to everyone. But if, God forbid, one of the channels where the blood must circulate narrows or becomes blocked.
The whole person can fall ill. It is exactly in this way that the Holy One, Blessed be He, transmits vitality, Chayut, to Israel. This vitality pours out onto each person, onto every Jew, everywhere in the world . We share our vitality with one another , just as blood circulates from one organ to another.
But if we lack love for our neighbor, that is to say Ahavat Yisrael, and this vitality is blocked because we refuse to connect with another Jew or a group of Jews, a category, well, then Jews cannot all be in good health. May God protect us from this. Not only does this harm the Jewish people, but it also affects the Shechinah. Which is the heart, as we have said, that dispenses this kindness to each and every one of us.
This is why the Sages teach that the reason for the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash was baseless hatred, Sinat Chinam. This is also why the Zohar states that after the destruction of the Beit Hamikdash, the Shechinah is described as sick in exile , in Galut. The Jewish people did not have enough love for their neighbor, which somehow made them all sick in this exile, and the Shechinah suffers as well. But when we make room in our hearts for every Jew and try as much as possible, it restores vigor, strength, and vitality to every Jew.
The Shechinah also feels better, until there is no longer any reason for it to be in exile and Mashiach can come immediately. He places every Jew where they live for a very specific purpose. The Rebbe tells us here that he wants us to ensure that Judaism and the Torah are spread, are strong, and that we teach the Torah to as many people as possible We can draw inspiration from the farmer . A harvest only grows when he plows the field and sows the seeds.
It is the same for us, for each one of us. When we work hard to plow and sow Judaism, the Torah, and the Mitzvot where we reside, fruits, the Rebbe tells us here, will surely ripen. Do it. Do it where you live.
If you are in Israel and you wish to organize a Torah class, whether at your home for a group of people or in your community, do not hesitate to send me a quick message on WhatsApp: +33 6 21 37 24 52. 06 21 37 24 52. I would be happy to come and share these moments live with you. Bechatzlacha.
Rambam L'Tzanah. In today's Rambam, we continue the study of gifts made by a gravely ill person, the Shechiv Mera. In chapter 10, the Rambam explains how to act when the sick person declares that a sum belongs to a third party or if someone claims that the sick person owed them money. In chapter 11, here the Rambam teaches us the procedure to follow when the words of a sick person lack clarity.
For example, if he declares he is giving this money to Tuvia, what do we do if two people named Tuvia come to claim the sum? In chapter 12 here, the second perik, the Rambam teaches us with what scrupulous care we must listen to the words of a sick person and carry out their wishes exactly. Be'ezrat Hashem, may we be able to welcome Mashiach. And then, all tears and all illnesses will disappear.
That was the chidush of the day. We leave you with a very beautiful word from the Rebbe Menachem Mendel of Kotzk If you truly believe that Hashem is capable of resolving everything tomorrow , then why, why do you worry today? True faith, Bitachon Bashem, is not measured by what you recite with your lips, but by the serenity of your heart in the moment of trial. The Rebbe explains that pure and sincere trust in Hakadosh Baruch Hu does not just constitute a comfort that is merely there passively to accompany us.
No, this Bitachon is the engine that attracts the revealed good of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. When we make the conscious choice to let go and place our trust in God, refusing to give in to worry, anxiety, and fear, we open the channels of blessing through which His light can materialize down here in the material world in which we live. Material and spiritual wealth to all of Am Yisrael and good health to those who need it. That was the chidush of the day; I invite you to share it with as many as possible and to send us your dedications via WhatsApp at +33 6 21 37 24 52.
See you soon.
