Must we absolutely recite the Shema Yisrael out loud, or can we say it in a whisper? As you all know, the first passage, "Shema Yisrael," must be recited out loud, and we say the rest in a whisper, except on Yom Kippur. We are compared to angels, so we say it out loud then too. Now, why must we absolutely recite the first sentence of the Shema, "Shema Yisrael," out loud? Why? Because it awakens our thoughts. It awakens what we call "kavvanah." We are better able to concentrate when we speak loudly rather than in a whisper. Secondly, imagine you enter the synagogue and see that everyone is reciting the Shema Yisrael.

May Hashem protect you. An interesting question.

You have just arrived, arriving a little late in the evening or a bit late in the morning. Well, it's not recommended, of course, but imagine that is your situation.

So, if everyone is saying Shema Yisrael, we are absolutely obligated to also recite the Shema Yisrael with what we call the "Kahal." Why? Because everyone is taking upon themselves the divine yoke. If we don't do it, it's as if we were saying we don't want to take it.
