The Midrash tells us it's like a prince —pardon, a king whose son, the prince , committed some faults. He committed faults to the point that at one moment the king says to him, "Listen, what you did was not right. You must go away as punishment, okay? Meaning, you must exile yourself from the palace." The Midrash tells us it's like a prince —pardon, a king whose son, the prince , committed some faults. He committed faults to the point that at one moment the king says to him, "Listen, what you did was not right. You must go away as punishment, okay? Meaning, you must exile yourself from the palace." That is what the prince does.

Then, after a while, the king feels sorrow. He says, "Oh, my son, where is he now? I am in pain. He must come back." So, what does he do?

He says to himself, "Well, I really, really want him to come home, but actually, I want to know, I want to test him. If I call him and he returns, is it for the comfort of the palace or is it to be with me?" So, what does he tell him? He says, "My dear son, you are invited to come back home, but know that it will not be in the comfort of the palace you know, not in the luxuries you lived in." No, it will be you and me in a small shack, a little hut made of odds and ends, and it will just be the two of us. Does that make you happy or not?

If the prince grumbles, it means deep down his return was self-interested. If the prince says , "But the main thing is to be with you . It doesn't matter if it's a palace or a hut, the essential thing is to be with you." Then the king understands that all his teshuva, the fact that he sincerely regrets what he did and wants to return, is not for the comfort, but to be with the king. It's the same thing.
